3rd Mobile Expo 2014 targets Bt1.5-bn sales

The third and final "Thailand Mobile Expo 2014" is expected to generate at least Bt1.5 billion in sales during its four days from yesterday until Sunday. High-end smartphones are the highlight, while wearable devices also have high potential.

Opas Cherdpunt, managing director of M Vision, organiser of the country’s largest mobile-device expo, said this third event was the only one this year expected to see spending reach the Bt1.5-billion level seen last year.
“The first two events this year saw sales down by 10-20 per cent because of the economic and political crises. At this time, there is no negative factor, while new high-end smartphones have been launched and there are more wearable devices.
“We have six more smartphone brands, while we have double the number of wearable-device brands as well. There are around 100 brands of mobile phones offering promotions at TME during these four days,” Opas said.
Ekaraj Panjavinin, leader of Microsoft (Thailand)’s consumer channel group, said the Surface Pro 3 was featured at the expo.
Microsoft expects the Thai market for information and communications technology hardware will reach Bt91 billion in value this year, up 4.3 per cent, as investments in IT systems gather pace.
Within this market, Microsoft sees the Surface Pro 3 as a trend-setter in the mobility and hybrid segment. With its combination of tablet-like portability and PC-class performance, the company says Surface Pro 3 can address the needs of both consumers and enterprises.
Nitipat Praweenwongwuthi, associate director of marketing at Acer Computer, said that according to analysis firm Canalys, there were two main categories of wearable devices.
The first is a basic device serving a specific set of purposes that serves as an accessory to a smart device, designed to be worn on the body and not carried, but which cannot run third-party computing applications. The second type is the smart wearable, a multi-purpose device that can run third-party applications.
