Intel hopes new processor for 2-in-1 devices will boost sales

Intel, which expects flat revenue growth this year, has announced its new Core M processor, designed for two-in-one devices. It hopes the new processor will be a mainstream item in the Thai market next year.

Sontiya Nujeenseng, country manager of Intel Microelectronics, said the firm hoped to resume revenue growth as the government stimulates the economy, while new technology in the pipeline will encourage customers to purchase products.
He said the new Intel Core M processor family was designed to deliver on the promise of one of the world’s thinnest laptops and highest-performance tablets in a single two-in-one device. It will power such devices from a variety of manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba.
Intel saw that there would be two new two-in-one models available by the end of this year and expects the new processor will be mainstream for such devices in the coming years, covering about 30-40 models of the market next year.
“Intel’s new processor was purpose-built for performance in the thinnest, fanless ultra-mobile devices. The Intel Core M processor can power razor-thin devices with Intel Core processor-level performance and deliver up to double the battery life when compared with a four-year-old system,” he said.
Devices that come with the new Intel Core M processor will start at more than Bt18,000 and go beyond Bt70,000.
Sontiya said International Data Corporation had reported that the market for desktop and notebook computers this year would decline to 2.4 million units. Last year, the figure for that market was 3 million units.
He said his company believed that the desktop/notebook market in Thailand would improve over the first half of his year, which saw negative growth, with the total market dropping by about 10-20 per cent.
