AIS launches flexible YOU! Mobile service

Advanced Info Service yesterday introduced YOU! Mobile, a new concept of online mobile services that gives customers the freedom to design their own package and later swap between the data and voice elements, as part of its goal to become the country's d

AIS claims that the flexible-use service is the first of its kind in the world.
Meanwhile, the company wants the government to approve the auction of 4G spectrum licences as soon as possible, as being granted such a licence is one means of enabling AIS to serve the government’s plan to create a full digital-economy landscape.
Pratthana Leelapanang, AIS executive vice president – marketing, said the launch of YOU! Mobile marked the half-way point of becoming the digital-life service provider.
The goal was announced by AIS chief executive officer Somchai Lertsutiwong on the day he took office in July this year.
YOU! Mobile allows customers to design their voice and Internet data package by themselves, and gives them the flexibility to swap between the two elements in order to receive the best value for money based on their individual needs and usage.
The service is currently only being offered to new subscribers, who have to insert a YOU! Mobile SIM card into their smart phone in order to use it. It will later be extended to include other services.
AIS targets about 1 million users of the new service by the end of next year, said the executive.
Chief operating officer Hui Weng Cheong said: “2014 is the year that the telecommunication service market has changed to the digital life more clearly, because digital and online are playing a role in everything in our lives, and all around us. Thailand has the second-biggest [rate of] social-media usage in the world. This is a clear sign that Thai consumers are ready for the digital life.”
Meanwhile, Pratthana said AIS wanted the government to approve the auction process for 4G licences as soon as possible, which would facilitate AIS in serving the government’s goal of achieving a full digital economy.
Earlier, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission planned to auction licences for the 1,800MHz spectrum, which can be used to provide 4G service, and the 900MHz spectrum this year.
However, the National Council for Peace and Order ordered the watchdog to suspend the schedule, pending its complete clarification of the plans to the junta.
