Chinese IT and telecom equipment supplier Huawei Technologies believes that Thailand could become a regional ICT hub, according to Yang Shu, president and chief executive of Huawei Southeast Asia.
Yang made the remark during a meeting with Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha and four others yesterday during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China. Accompanying Prayut at the meeting were Commerce Minister Chatchai Sarikulya, Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn, Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong, and Deputy Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.
According to Prime Minister’s Office spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp, Prayut briefed Huawei about Thailand’s policy of promoting free trade and investment. The military regime also wants to see foreign investment in all parts of Thailand to create jobs and distribute income evenly. It supports investment in the energy and telecom sectors to help usher Thailand into the “digital economy” era.

TOT, Rangsit U unite
TOT has teamed up with Rangsit University to expand educational innovations by utilising the telecom agency’s ICT networks in support of the government’s “digital economy” policy. TOT and the university signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday on the collaboration.
University president Arthit Ourairat said the collaboration would help bring the institution’s innovation services to students nationwide via TOT’s advanced networks.
Acting TOT president Thanwa Laohasiriwong said this was part of the agency’s strategy to seek more business opportunities and revenue from its telecom infrastructure assets.
The collaboration includes TOT’s provision of key telecom services such as third-generation and Wi-Fi service and “virtual classrooms” to the university’s students.
