Seven major retailers agree to cheap dishes at food courts

Seven modern trade operators have responded to a Commerce Ministry request by providing 10 cheap fast-food dishes at their food courts nationwide, starting this month and running until June, to help lower the cost of living.

In response to many complaints about high food prices, Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya yesterday met with the modern traders to ask them to help cash-strapped consumers.
Central Group, The Mall, Tops, MBK, Makro, Tesco Lotus and Big C agreed to provide the 10 cheap dishes.
For most, the dishes will be sold for Bt30 or Bt35, while at The Mall and Central courts prices will start from Bt40.
Other food retailers are not yet being targeted by the ministry.
Chatchai said the ministry would closely monitor food traders to ensure prices were labelled clearly, and it would stage random inspections to crack down on businesses overcharging consumers.
Traders found to have overcharged consumers faced stringent enforcement of the Goods and Service Prices Act, he said.
