Govt to proceed with planned petroleum bidding

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha insisted that the 21st petroleum bidding round would occur this month as planned, despite objection from former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and some civic groups.

He said on Friday that the bidding round could go ahead, while the government would set up a stage where the Energy Ministry and opponents can settle their differing opinions.
"I'm not stubbornly pushing for it. They (Energy Ministry) should fight with facts and figures. They must answer if we can launch our own exploration, if we're ready. They must clarify this to the opponents," he said.
He added that he would not have personal discussion with Abhisit nor demand anything from the opponents. Rather, he sought to establish understanding.
He also said that with proper legal planning, the bid could be cancelled should complication intensify.
