Thailand is the first country in Asean to be selected by ChinaCache, a CDN provider based in Beijing, for such a partnership. The company has partnerships in 112 countries worldwide and Thailand is the latest one. As part of the deal, ChinaCache has already implemented 200 cache servers in UIH data centres.
Sunti Medhavikul, senior deputy managing director for marketing and strategy at UIH, said the firm expected revenue to grow by around 10 per cent this year from Bt3.5 billion in 2014, and one of the major growth contributors would be the partnership with ChinaCache. Revenue from international customers is expected to account for about 8 per cent of the total, and to double within three years. “This is a long-term partnership with ChinaCache and its only strategic partnership in Asean,” Sunti said.
UIH hopes to be a hub for broadband services in Asean, and this cooperation should provide faster access to Chinese content in the region. UIH’s client base currently includes about 10 Internet service providers in Asean countries, mostly in Laos and Cambodia. It is looking for more ISP customers in Myanmar and Vietnam.
Usually, UIH invests Bt1 billion a year in business expansion. Currently 80 per cent of its revenue is from data network services and the rest from other network solutions, such as data centres.
UIH has two Internet gateways, in Singapore and Hong Kong, and two data centres in Thailand.
