Chevron school campaign to boost opportunities
Salman Saadat, general manager for products at Chevron (Thailand), has signed a memorandum of understanding with Piyabutr Cholvijarn, president of the Kenan Institute of Asia, to fund the “Caltex Fuel Your School II” campaign.
The campaign aims to enhance youth competency and broaden education opportunities through an innovative, project-based learning process at the head office of Chevron (Thailand) in Bangkok.
Through a project-based learning model, the project will help develop scientific thinking, systematic problem-based learning and communication skills for students while motivating them to relate subject knowledge in the areas of health, safety and environment to the real world.
The project effort in the second year will focus on 200 middle school students in 10 educational opportunity expansion schools in Sa Kaew province.
Time Warner Cable’s effective ‘green’ initiative
Time Warner Cable’s “Go Green” initiative has resulted in a 38-per-cent reduction in the company’s carbon intensity over the past two years, far exceeding its goal of 15 per cent set in 2012.
The company focused on increasing energy efficiency, improving waste and vehicle management, promoting sustainability within its supply chain and building employee “green teams” around the country.
Rob Marcus, chairman and CEO, said last week that he was proud of the employees for their work in helping the company greatly exceed its goal.
He applauded the green teams for the leadership roles they played in ensuring the company does its part to protect the environment for future generations.
Energy efficiency was one of the largest efforts targeting a reduction in the company’s carbon intensity.
The company finalised its real estate and facilities guidelines based on US Green Energy Star standards, which has led to the implementation of environment-friendly practices at company facilities throughout the country.
The media firm also achieved a 14.7-per-cent increase from 2012 fuel efficiency within its fleet of 20,000 vehicles by purchasing more fuel-efficient vehicles. Last year, more than half of all suppliers and vendors were screened using environmental criteria. More than 20 per cent of total office supply spending is on green products and new systems are in place to increase green spending.
The company also achieved the goal of having at least 90 per cent of all new set-top boxes meet US EPA Energy Star 3.0 efficiency standards.
Last year, the company introduced the green teams to help more employees get involved in the company’s “Go Green” efforts. Employees in 15 teams around the country raise environmental awareness, help create operating efficiencies and support local environmental organisations.
Tesco Lotus puts its best foot forward
for disadvantaged school children
The lack of something as simple as a pair of shoes can have a severe impact on children’s school performance and future educational opportunities. This is why Tesco Lotus has continued its “Get Kids to School” project for the third year running, to donate 16,000 pairs of shoes to children attending Phra Dabos Foundation Schools in Southern border provinces and underprivileged children all around Thailand.
“We want every child to start school with a smile on their face in a new pair of shoes, and for everyone to understand the huge meaning of just shoes for these children. Of course, each donation of shoes also includes two pairs of socks,” said Charkrit Direkwattanachai, head of Corporate Communication and Sustanability at Tesco Lotus.
This year, the project is dedicated to honour the 60th Birthday Anniversary of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 2. We would like our customers to join in making donations to help Thai children who are the future of the nation, he said.
A customer donation of Bt99 at any Tesco Lotus store nationwide obtains one pair of shoes for one child. Tesco Lotus will top up these donations with a portion of income from the sale of school shoes to ensure the donation totals 16,000 pairs of shoes. The campaign runs until May 31.
Besides the donation of shoes, Tesco Lotus is also helping cash-strapped parents get their children to school with steep discounts and low prices on shoes, school uniforms and school supplies, as well as free product deals, and zero-cost financing offers over the Back to School period.
“We are hoping our customers will join us for the best deals for their children, while contributing to our Get Kids to School campaign by simply buying shoes for their own children,” concluded Charkrit.
