MINISTRY UPBEAT
The Commerce Ministry is confident of drawing many traders to join the year’s fifth rice auction. Bidding for 668,228 tonnes of rice will be opened next Tuesday.
Bangjongjit Angsusingh, deputy director-general of the ministry’s Foreign Trade Department, said there was high demand for rice currently, especially white and jasmine rice, during the out-of-harvest season.
She said that after rainfall relieved the drought that has plagued the country for a long while, the market price of rice could see a slight reduction. However, it should not fall too much as there is still high demand in the world market, while neighbouring countries have been hit by floods.
According to the department, the average export price of 5-per-cent Thai white rice is US$363 per tonne, while jasmine rice is $860 a tonne.
The government has 15.11 million tonnes of rice in its stockpiles and plans to continue releasing rice every month.
