Nations agree on concession deals for Dawei
THE RECENT joint meeting between Thailand and Myanmar on the development of the Dawei Special Economic Zone touched on concession agreements for the project’s initial development phase and a supplemental memorandum of understanding.
The fourth Thailand-Myanmar joint high-level committee meeting for the SEZ and related project zones took place in Nay Pyi Taw on August 5.
The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula and Myanmar Vice President HE U Nyan Tun.
Concession agreements for the initial development phase and the supplemental MoU were approved by relevant state agencies in Myanmar.
The projects under these deals include a small port, a small power plant, a small water reservoir, and a telecommunications system.

Master plan
After the meeting, the DSEZ management committee also entered into concession agreements for the initial development phase with the consortium of Italian-Thai Development, Rojana Industrial Park Public Co, and LNG Plus International.
The committee also endorsed the master plan for the complete development phase of the DSEZ, and approved the development of the floating LNG terminal in line with the existing cooperative framework between Thailand and Myanmar.
It also approved in principle the use of the baht for trade and investment in Myanmar's special economic zones.
U NyanTun said development of the DSEZ in the initial phase would cost an estimated US$1.6 billion (Bt56.2 billion) and take eight years.
It could create about 300,000 jobs in the area by 2025, he said.
