BoI names 4 high-potential nations for investment

THE Board of Investment (BoI) is urging Thai businesses to invest in four emerging countries - Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh and Pakistan - given their natural resources, workforce, and economic growth rates.

Chollada Areerajjakul, director of the overseas investment promotion division at the BoI, said these four countries could become markets for Thai products, services and investment.

The BoI study on "Thai Investment Opportunities in Emerging Markets: Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh and Pakistan" will be presented at Swissotel le Concorde in Bangkok on October 12. Relevant regulations and business procedures in those countries will be explained at that time.

"The BoI pays high attention to countries with investment potential, and these four countries are ready for investment in different aspects," Chollada said.

Nigeria’s agricultural and food-processing industries have become attractive for Thai operators to invest in, given the country’s strength in the agricultural sector with tapioca, rice and sugar cane as the main outputs, the study said. It is also strong in mining.

Based on the study, Kyrgyzstan’s tourism and hotel businesses are attractive thanks to the country’s various landscapes and beautiful scenery. Its agricultural and food-processing industries are also intriguing.

In Bangladesh, the industries attractive for Thai investment include planting, processing of agricultural products and labour-intensive ones like textiles and garments. The country’s tourism and some related services have also begun expanding and have higher potential.

According to the study, Thai business operators have opportunities to invest in cultivation and processing of agricultural products, fishery and seafood processing, and textiles and garments in Pakistan.
