Digital economy
With five years to go to 2020, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says his country’s digital economy is heading in the right direction.
Citing the latest figures for ICT (information and communications technology) satellite accounts released by the Statistics Department, Najib said the contribution of the digital economy to gross domestic product reached 17 per cent last year.
“The digital economy significantly enhanced its contribution to GDP, from 16.38 per cent in 2013 to 17 per cent last year.
“Considering that 17 per cent was the 2020 target set back in 2011, it is evident that our digital economy is heading in the right direction,” Najib said in his opening remarks at the 27th MSC Malaysia Implementation Council Meeting here yesterday.
The 17-per-cent target is set by Digital Malaysia, a government initiative with the aim of spearheading the country towards a developed digital economy by 2020.
