Rotten rice auctioned

The Commerce Ministry is set to open bidding for 37,412 tonnes of rotten rice on December 1, the first auction for deteriorated rice from the government’s stocks.

Duangporn Rodphaya, director-general of Foreign Trade Department, said yesterday the spoiled rice will come from seven warehouses and be sold only to non-food industries or biomass producers.

The grains are low in quality after being stored in bad conditions for years.

To ensure that this lot will not be used for consumption, the government will stringently control shipping from warehouses to processors. The government will bargain for the best return, even though it admits that the price will be quite low.
