Moving towards import duty cut

Customs Department will this month discuss with the private sector on the proposed reduction of import duty on luxury goods and an increase in pick-up centres for duty-free goods as a means to encourage domestic spending and tourism.

Kulit Sombatsiri, Customs Department's director-general, said: “We will see what we can help as a part of promoting spending and tourism.”
He said that the pros and cons on the proposed import duty reduction would be weighed. If the import duty is to be cut, domestic business operators would not be affected.
Luxury goods are now subjected to 30 per cent of import duty.
