YG Foods Co, a South Korean food and restaurant company, will open a Bt550-million food and K-pop entertainment space at Show DC, a shopping complex on Rama IX Road, in the third quarter of this year to tap into "Korean fever".

Noh Hee-young, chief executive officer of the food arm of YG Entertainment Group, said yesterday that the company decided to open its YG Republique in Bangkok when it saw the number of tourists visiting Thailand and also Thais’ interest in Korean food and lifestyles.

YG Republique will combine a wide range of entertainment experiences, including street bars, K-pop clubs and several Korean restaurants.

All of these will be brought to life at Show DC, the first venue for YG Republique outside Korea.

In South Korea, the first YG Republique outlet is already operating and the second will start soon, she said.

Chayaditt Hutanuwatra, chairman of Show DC Corp, said the growing popularity of Korean culture in Thailand over the past 10 years had been phenomenal.

The company has seen unprecedented K-pop fever both here and in several other Asian countries.

"YG Republique is the first manifestation of this concept. It is the ultimate authentic Korean experience.

"The partnership between quality teams from the two countries also reflects the confidence in the growth potential of Thailand’s business sector in the eyes of international investors.

"The flow of foreign funds into the country will greatly contribute to the Thai economy and employment.

"It is in line with the Thai government’s vision to build confidence in the economy and investment," he said.

Show DC is more than a shopping mall or tourist attraction, Chayaditt said.

"The complex is destined to become a new Thai and Asean landmark as well as a gateway to Asia to welcome Thais and international visitors to enjoy what is unique about Thailand and Asia.

"It will be a treat to the eye and the heart to shop and enjoy, as you won’t find what’s on offer anywhere else," he said.

Show DC Corp has invested Bt9.5 billion to develop Show DC on 27 rai (4.3 hectares) of land.

It will supply 150,000 square metres of floor space to the retail market.
