Library for blind kids opens in Kuala Lumpur

The Children’s Corner of HT Ong Library at the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) has opened in Kuala Lumpur.

Fully sponsored by the Lions Club Seremban Central at a cost of 6,000 ringgit (Bt54,000), it is said to be the first library for blind children in the country.
The library’s chairman said he mooted the idea for the project last year. He said that when the Lions Club approached MAB on how to help, the “timing could not have been better”.
Mohd Safni Hussain, MAB acting administrator and secretary, said: “The sponsorship included renovation and refurbishment of a vacant staff room into a colourful children’s corner with reading material in Braille, large-print books and educational games for young children.”
He said there were also 1,000 Braille storybooks donated by Kobe City Silver College English Braille Group.
These include Japanese storybooks such as “Rakugo Comic Stories from Old Japan” and “Quill – the Life of a Guide Dog”.
Other titles include popular children’s tales such as Disney’s “Frozen” and “Huckleberry Finn”.
Mohd Safni said the Library Resource Centre, an information-collection centre for visually impaired persons, provided services such as the production of audio books, large-print books and Braille books.
Part of the sponsorship also included the purchase and sourcing of Braille storybooks and educational games for visually impaired children, said Lions Club Seremban Central president Theiva Malar Sinnatary.
Theiva Malar said that last year, the club donated 10 resting chairs for blind masseurs to use for their clients and organised a Braille reading and quiz contest.
