BOT CHIEF WARNS OF INCREASED FX VOLATILITY

The central bank governor said yesterday that he had seen increased capital inflows since Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and warned of heightened exchange rate volatility caused by fund inflows into emerging markets.
However, the central bank is not worried about the inflows yet, Bank of Thailand Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob told reporters.
Thailand has seen fund inflows of about Bt43.9 billion into stocks and bonds since June 24.
Veerathai also said the government should take the lead in stimulating the economy.
The central bank has left its policy interest rate unchanged at 1.50 per cent since April 2015. It next reviews policy on August 3 and most economists expect no change. – Reuters

REEMPLOYMENT PLANNED

The Labour Ministry will seek jobs for the 960 subcontracted workers who accepted voluntary retirement deals at Toyota Motor Thailand Co Ltd (TMT) in four provinces in the East, Sumet Mahosot, deputy permanent secretary at the ministry, said.
TMT will have the names of the workers ready for the ministry today.
Sumet said no workers had been laid-off by other car makers or auto-parts manufacturers yet. However, he added, at least 240,000 workers are still needed in other industries, such as a rising demand for skilled welders in the construction sector.

SCHEME FOR TOP SPOT

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports yesterday unveiled a draft of the Thai Tourism Vision 2036 and a second draft of the National Tourism Plans 2017-2021. The drafts of the 20-year vision and the new six-year tourism schemes aim to enhance the local hospitality sector so Thailand becomes a quality destination.
The ministry is also set to pave the way for long-term development as well as boost competitiveness.
The current political system, the changing industry landscape and the ageing society has become causes of major concern for the authorities. The ministry has also mapped out proactive action by working more closely with the private sector and stakeholders in order to reach the tourism income target of Bt22 trillion in the next 20 years.

NO APPLICATION

No executives from the financial sector have applied for Krungthai Bank president’s post, with the deadline for recruitment ending today, Somchai Sujjapongse, permanent secretary of Finance Ministry, and chairman of the KTB board, said yesterday.
He said the board has to select a new president for the bank, so it can continue with its digital banking.
The bank announced on July 4 that the job would be on offer once Vorapak Tanyawong’s term ends on November 8.
Vorapak has decided not to go for a second term. He was selected by the previous government to succeed Apisak Tantivorawong, who is currently the finance minister. KTB is the second-largest bank in the country based on assets, is a major tool in financing government-supported projects and in helping those who affected by the economic slowdown.
