DTAC talks with TOT on broadband partnership

TOTAL ACCESS Communication is interested in partnering with state telecommunications agency TOT to provide wireless broadband service on the 2.3-gigahertz spectrum, DTAC chief executive officer Lars Norling said yesterday.

DTAC chief technology officer Prathet Tankuranun added that the company had held talks with TOT on a possible partnership deal.
TOT plans to invite all private telecom companies to propose partnerships for its proposed 2.3GHz wireless broadband service. It recently submitted for the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission’s consideration its revised business plan to utilise 60MHz of its bandwidth on that spectrum to offer the service.
It hopes to launch the service this year, with the ambition to acquire about 20 million subscribers over the next five years.
DTAC holds a 2.1GHz licence granted by the NBTC and holds concessions on the 1,800- and 850-megahertz spectra granted by CAT Telecom.
Its CAT concessions will expire late next year.
Norling said the company had been preparing to deal with the concessions’ expiration. He believes that after the concessions end, the company will be able to secure additional bandwidth to continue to serve its subscribers.
DTAC currently uses 20MHz of the 1,800MHz spectrum to provide fourth-generation wireless service nationwide, and 5MHz for 2G service. It also utilises 5MHz of the 2.1GHz spectrum to offer 4G service and 10MHz for 3G.
Last year, DTAC continued |its rapid network expansion |with the installation of more than 15,000 4G cellular base stations nationwide. Additionally, cellular signal boosters were installed in |more than 200 buildings across Thailand.
DTAC says it aims to expand its 4G network coverage across the nation by a further 25 per cent, including on 1,000 buildings, by 2020.
