Aeon Co (M)’s plan to build a new shopping centre in Batu Pahat, in the Malaysian state of Johor, has hit a snag after the termination of a deal to purchase a plot of land there.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the retailer, which already has an Aeon Big hypermarket in Batu Pahat, said the agreement dated July 10, 2014, to buy the 20-acre (8-hectare) freehold land from Genting Property for 34.8 million ringgit (about Bt270 million) was cancelled on Wednesday.
This was because of the non-fulfilment of the conditions precedent within the conditional period, and the two parties could not reach an agreement to extend the conditional period, Aeon said.
In the first announcement on the proposed land purchase, Aeon had expected to receive the approvals required from the relevant authorities within 20 months from the date of the agreement, which could be extended if both parties agreed.
Aeon said it would seek a refund totalling 13.9 million ringgit – comprising the deposit plus two other payments – from Genting Property. – The Star
