Exactly how tourism’s impacts can best be evaluated will be the focus of the sixth World Tourism Organisation International Conference on Statistics in Manila from June 21-24.
Coinciding with the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the conference will chiefly address ways of “Measuring Sustainable Tourism”.
The host organisation’s initiative “Towards a Statistical Framework for Measuring Sustainable Tourism” underlines the need to gauge the full effects of the tourism sector. Attendees at the Manila meeting will consider the first draft of a framework for doing so.
The Philippines has taken a lead role in the region in assessing tourism and encouraging different institutions to collaborate on gathering statistics. It has prepared a Tourism Satellite Account framework to guide the effort.
The conference will open with a Ministerial Roundtable aimed at aligning efforts to persuade governments of the need for integrated and reliable data to manage and promote a more sustainable tourism sector.
A Panel of Statistical Institutes will discuss practices implemented at the global, regional and national levels.
Other technical sessions will focus on links among the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainable tourism, including job creation, sub-national measurement, Sustainable Development Goals indicators, and data sources.
