Up to 40,000 screened out of welfare list

Slightly more than half the people who registered as low-income earners reported their yearly income at less than Bt30,000, while about 30,000 to 40,000 of total applicants have not passed the criteria during the checks made so far, the Ministry of Finance said.

Somchai Sujjapongse, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said that about 7.5 million of the 14.1 million people who registered for government support will be required to show more supporting evidence of their financial position.
He said some names that had been registered could not be found against official records and, in some cases, they were found to have died. There were also irregularities found with the names of applicants,
The verification process for the low-income applicants for future state welfare programmes is expected to be completed this month.
