SCG launches innovation centre to enhance R&D collaboration

SCG has furthered its vision to become a leader in sustainable innovations in Asean by launching a centre for research and development (R&D) collaboration with government, private and education sectors worldwide.

The Open Innovation Centre by SCG aimed to create faster and better innovation networks, drive R&D towards commercialisation, respond to consumer needs, and enhance people’s quality of life, as well as increase the competency of Thai industry, the company said.
The centre, at Science Park inside Thammasat University Rangsit, would provide the opportunity for groups of researchers or anyone with a new idea to collaborate with SCG.
Suvit Maesincee, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, said at the opening ceremony that the centre was in line with the goal to increase Thailand’s competitiveness and promote collaboration among every sector through the Thailand 4.0 project.
He said it could be a key private-sector driver in helping the country achieve the economic goal of shifting from a middle-income to a high-income country.
Atchaka Sibunruang, Minister of Science and Technology, said that R&D science and technology was a significant process in forging an economic structure driven by innovations aligning with the Thailand 4.0 policy.
It would help Thailand’s industry to become more competitive at an Asean level, Atchaka said.
Cholanat Yanaranop, executive vice president of SCG and chairman of the SCG innovation committee, said that the company had more than 1,800 R&D experts, a budget of more than Bt6 billion per year for R&D, and long experience and customer insight in both Thailand and Asean.
“The Open Innovation Centre by SCG has full capability to strengthen innovation development for the company’s businesses and partners to faster create high-value added (HVA) products and services in order to respond to various customer needs,” Cholanat said.
“R&D is significant for SCG in enhancing competitiveness. In 2016, SCG recorded sales of Bt160 billion from the HVA group, which accounted for 38 per cent of the total revenue from sales.”
The innovation centre would also support R&D for worldwide startups that possess intellectual property in science and technology, allowing them to collaborate with SCG in developing high-capability innovations
