EXIM backs biomass plants in two southern provinces

Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM) has signed a Bt2.257-billion agreement with Thai Solar Energy Plc to finance three biomass-power plants in Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat with a combined generating capacity of 22.2 megawatts.

EXIM president Pisit Serewiwattana signed the documentation along with the directors of Thai Solar Energy group members – Cathleen Maleenont, Thawatchai Luengvoraphan and Somphop Prompanapitak of Oscar Save The World Co Ltd and Bangsawan Green Co Ltd.
Also signing on to the deal was the Provincial Electricity Authority, the main power purchaser.
Pisit said EXIM was lending financial support to promote the development of biomass energy as per government policy supporting renewable energy.
The Thailand Power Development Plan 2015-2036 targets 5,570MW of biomass power by 2036.
The policy is aimed at optimising use of abundant agricultural residue from rubber, rice and bagasse cultivation, add value to the products and give farmers and communities additional income.
“This project is Thai Solar Energy’s first biomass power plant,” Pisit noted.
“The group operates renewable power plants both at home and overseas. Currently, all of the group's projects are solar-power plants. Realising the group’s potential, we are ready to support their expansion not only in Thailand but also elsewhere.
“This is also in line with EXIM’s strategy to create trade and investment opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs,” he added.
