CURRENCY CONTROLS EASED

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has relaxed more of its regulations with a reform applying to exchange rate controls, raising the cap for investment in foreign securities from US$75 billion (Bt2.49 trillion) to $100 billion.
The move aims to promote Thai investment in foreign securities, said Mathee Supapongse, BOT deputy governor for monetary stability. The central bank has sent a letter dated August 30 to the Securities and Exchange Commission on the regulatory relaxation.
Further regulatory relaxation has also been given to currency exchangers, who would be able to trade or exchange foreign-currency notes with banks in other countries or with currency exchangers in other countries as deemed appropriate for more flexibility.
The central bank’s regulatory relaxations will come into force in mid-September.
