The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index surged 0.87 per cent to close at 1,706.95 points on Tuesday, after Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said earlier in the day that the general election would take place in November next year.

Speaking after chairing a meeting of the National Council for Peace and Order, the premier also said the government would announce the precise election date in June.
