AOT STUDY SOUGHT ON
AIRPORT EXPANSION

The Transport Ministry has asked Airports of Thailand (AOT) to conduct a feasibility study on its plan to expand the Chiang Mai airport’s capacity so as to give a clear indication to companies interested in joint investment in the project.
Ministry deputy permanent secretary Peraphon Thawornsupacharoen said yesterday that while two to three private firms had shown interest to join with AOT as a Public-Private Partnership, the ministry could not give them a clear investment direction.
AOT intends to expand the Chiang Mai airport capacity to serve 20 million passengers a year from the present 8 million, which will be enough to serve the expected passenger number over the next 15 years.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) master plan has proposed that the second Chiang Mai airport be set up in a new location to serve a rising number of passengers, which is expected to reach 22 million per year in 2034.
