An oil and gas exploration company has suspended many of its operations in the Gulf of Thailand following a warning that extreme weather was on the way.
PTT Exploration and Production has established a 24-hour monitoring team to closely observe and prepare safety measures for its offshore operations, the company said.
In recent days it has also moved staff and contractors who cannot carry out their normal duties back to Songkhla province; temporarily suspended travel to and from its Bongkot North, Bongkot South and Arthit platforms, suspended some exploration and maintenance activities; and moved drilling rigs and vessels to unaffected areas.
Production at all three offshore platforms is being continued for the time being until there is further news of weather conditions.
The company’s actions follow an Offshore Weather Services (OWS) warning of a tropical depression in the Gulf. In its latest report OWS said the tropical depression would weaken and move past production platforms in the Gulf of Thailand on Friday night.
PTTEP intends to then remobilize drilling rigs, staff and contractors but will provide more updates if the situation changes.
