RIVER TRANSPORT, SIGNAGE FOCUS OF LAO TOURISM

Lao government officials, private sector representatives and development partners discussed the nation’s tourism activities plan for 2018 at the Lao National Destination Management Network annual meeting 2017 (DMN) in Vientiane last week. .
The meeting reviewed efforts on destination management as well as facilitating idea sharing among government and private sector representatives on tourism activities. The meeting gave authorities a chance to discuss with stakeholders the challenges facing tourism in the past to guide and improve future efforts, Director General of the Tourism Marketing Department of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Soun Manivong said.
Focus on tourism-related support activities in 2018 included the development of river transportation standards (tourist boats), he said.
Sectors involved will work towards development and implementation of national tourism signage guidelines for both directional and interpretative signage.
Development of a national standard certification for ‘greening’ Laos’ hospitality sector (reducing waste, water and energy consumption, responsible employment and minimising impacts) would be undertaken. Content databases such as photo, video and text would be created.
The plan also works towards a national tourism language curriculum for specific languages needed for implementation at national and provincial levels and an assessment and review system for tour guides to ensure quality and continual updating of skills.
The DMN plays an important role to enhance cooperation between government, individual sectors, projects and international organisations with stakes in Lao tourism. – Vientiane Times
