Port Authority signs MOU with Sri Lankan port group

The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Sri Lanka’s Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) in fresh cooperation with Ranong port.

Present at the signing ceremony on August 21 were PAT director Kamolsak Promprayoon, HIPG manager Mr Lance Zuo, PAT deputy director Chamnan Chairith and assistant HIPG manager Mr Bindu Ranasinghe. The event was held at an auditorium on the 19th floor of PAT headquarters in Bangkok.

Among key details in the MOU are port-to-port cooperation, communication channels aimed at improving exchange of information and facilitating internal operations, and investment and marketing of businesses concerning both Thai and Sri Lankan ports.

Under the agreement, PAT and HIPG are required to organise a joint working group meeting every two years to evaluate their performance, and push for reciprocal freight operations in support of transport and logistical systems between Thailand and Sri Lanka.

On the day the MOU was signed, a seminar titled “Thailand & Sri Lanka: Opportunity and Way Forward” was held. The speakers included Zuo, Christina Enita Hernawati of Samudera Traffic, senior PAT official Thanai Wiphasthawas and Assoc Prof Jackkrit Duangpattra, director of the Transportation Institute, Chulalongkorn University.

Jackkrit is the chief adviser of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.
