'We Offer No Excuses': Thai Airways CEO Speaks Out Over Luggage Mess

Chai Eamsiri offers a sincere apology, cites staff flooding and dual ground duties for operational breakdown, and partners with Thai Post for home delivery

  • Thai Airways' CEO attributed the baggage crisis to a severe staff shortage after urban flooding prevented specialized ground handling personnel from reporting to work.
  • The problem was exacerbated because Thai Airways acts as a major ground handler for both its own flights and numerous partner airlines at its Suvarnabhumi Airport hub.
  • To manage the situation, the airline is proactively canceling flights, transferring some ground handling duties, and has partnered with Thai Post to deliver stranded luggage directly to passengers.
  • The CEO issued a sincere public apology, stating "we offer no excuses," and committed to personally clarifying the recovery efforts in a live online broadcast.

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) has unveiled an emergency recovery plan to resolve severe baggage backlogs and flight delays, with Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri pledging to "face reality" and cut short the crisis through proactive flight cancellations and third-party logistics support.

Detailing the root causes of the disruption at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, Chai explained that specialized ground handling personnel were unable to report for duty after severe urban flooding inundated their homes.

Although THAI dispatched vehicles to collect employees from their residences, many remained behind out of concern for their families and property.

The resulting labor deficit triggered a rapid snowball effect, leaving vast quantities of cargo and passenger luggage accumulated across the terminal.

Addressing criticism over why THAI suffered more severely than rival carriers facing the same weather conditions, Chai noted that Suvarnabhumi serves as the airline's primary hub and busiest operational base.

Crucially, THAI acts as a major ground handler not only for its own services but also for foreign partner airlines.

"From my on-site inspection, customer partner airlines experienced baggage backlogs as well, though not as severe as ours," Chai said. "When the crisis hit, Thai Airways had to carry the operational burden for both our own flights and those of customer airlines simultaneously, resulting in the heaviest impact."

Decisive Measures to Contain Disruptions

To prevent the situation from spiralling further out of control, THAI has implemented protocols to consolidate or cancel unmanageable flights well in advance, rebooking affected passengers onto alternative carriers.

The flag carrier has also coordinated with Airports of Thailand (AOT) to temporarily transfer a portion of its third-party ground handling duties to external service providers.

Addressing widespread customer frustration over frontline communication breakdowns, Chai conceded that staff shortages on the tarmac created severe information blackouts.

Because ground crews could not transport bags from aircraft to carousels on schedule, staff were unable to provide arriving passengers with accurate collection times.

To alleviate crowding inside the terminal, THAI advised passengers to forgo waiting at baggage carousels and instead scan an on-site QR code to arrange home delivery.

While local residents can await their luggage at home, Chai acknowledged that foreign tourists with tight travel itineraries face significantly greater hardship.

To expedite recovery, THAI has partnered with national courier Thai Post, which has deployed vehicles and logistics personnel to sort and deliver stranded bags directly to passenger accommodations.

Corporate volunteers from THAI’s headquarters have also been mobilised to assist at arrival terminals and catering facilities, with operations expected to normalise today.

"Thai Airways offers no excuses and deeply regrets this occurrence," Chai stated. "But now that it has happened, we are committed to facing reality and resolving the situation with our full efforts. I sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart to all passengers and customers for the severe inconvenience and impact caused."

In a further move to address growing public concern, Chai will go live on Facebook at 11:30 today to personally clarify the situation, outline the ongoing operational response, and answer further questions regarding the recovery efforts.
