Southern teachers urged to follow safety measures

The teachers federation in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani yesterday issued a four-point statement saying teachers were a main target of those behind the unrest in the region, and urged teachers to strictly follow security

Federation deputy president Manop Boonthaviroj said the situation had worsened since 37-year-old teacher Khanit Lamnui was shot dead in Yala's Raman district on Tuesday. Authorities needed to review and beef up security, measures he said, and teachers needed to follow them and not make the situation worse through a lack of discipline.

Yala police chief Pol Maj-General Chote Chavalwiwat said police suspected a group led by insurgent suspect Sofwan Sama - who is wanted for previous bomb attacks in Raman district - in Khanit's killing. Sofwan was reportedly a member of a team led by Dorohing Da-esor, also known as Dorohing Asong, which allegedly carried out earlier attacks in Raman and Narathiwat's Reu Soh district.

In related news, a representative of His Majesty the King yesterday presented royally granted soil for the burial ceremony of volunteer ranger Niroseulam Jehnu, who was killed on duty on August 21 in Narathiwat's Rangae district. The ranger's family received Bt50,000 assistance from Their Majesties the King and Queen on August 30, and will receive about Bt2 million in assistance and compensation from local authorities.
