Bill Gates tops US rich list as Buffett the big

Los Angeles - Microsoft founder Bill Gates remained at the top of Forbes annual list of the richest Americans published Wednesday.
The Forbes 400 list showed the average wealth of US billionaires increased by 12 per cent over the last year for an average level of 3.8 billion dollars.
But one who was not doing that well was the legendary investor and number 2 on the list Warren Buffett, whose net worth plunged by 6 billion dollars to 39 billion dollars. This compared to a 5-billion-dollar jump in Gates' value to 59 billion dollars.
Oracle founder Larry Ellison made 6 billion dollars in the year to bring his fortune to 33 billion dollars, followed by the industrialists the Koch brothers, casino developer Sheldon Adelson, financier George Soros and the Wal-Mart owners, the Walton family.
Forbes said that 262 people on the list saw their fortunes grow, while only 72 saw a decline.
Self-made millionaires made up 70 per cent of the rich list.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 27, was the biggest jumper on the list as he saw his fortune swell by 10.6 billion dollars to 17.5 billion dollars. That earned him 14th spot, one ahead of Google founders Larry page and Sergey Brin, who are both worth 16.7 billion dollars.//DPA
