Muenster/Heek, Germany - One woman and two men died in a 52-car pileup in foggy conditions late Friday on an expressway in northern Germany, authorities said.
The accident left 35 people injured, including 14 in serious condition, a police spokeswoman in North Rhine-Westphalia state said.
She described the wreckage-strewn roadway was a "debris field."
Many of the injured were trapped in their cars and had to be freed by emergency workers, who rushed to the scene from a wide area.
It was not immediately clear if the reduced visibility from fog was the cause of the accident, the spokeswoman said.//DPA
