Labour Ministry estimates flood-related layoffs at 100,000

The number of workers losing their jobs for good through flood-forced layoffs should be around 100,000, not as high as up to 920,000 in a recent estimate by the National Economic and Social Development Board, Labour Ministry permanent secretary Somkiat Ch

Most of the 100,000 are those working under bulk employment deals with subcontractors, while more than 661,627 workers, out of a total of flood-affected 993,929, are temporarily out of work, and likely to be employed once their businesses recover or continue operations, he said.

The NESDB estimated that unemployment rate in the last four-month period is around 1.8 to 2.3 per cent, or around 780,000 to 920,000 workers, after 28,678 businesses in 39 flooded provinces have closed. He cited a ministry report that 14,647 businesses had reopened and re-employed 332,302 workers.
