Electric fence protecting drugs killed man

The Criminal Court yesterday handed down a jail term to a 73yearold woman for electrifying her property fence, an action that caused the death of a man.

She was sentenced to three years and four months in jail.
Thongdee Jamsri was convicted of not just causing fatal harm to another person but also of growing kratom, an illicit drug. Up to 41 kilos of the illegal plant had been confiscated.
The court was told she set up the 220voltage electrified fence to protect her 30 kratom plants in her garden in Bangkok’s Bang Kapi district and prevent stealing.
In February last year, Marorpi Langmae was found dead next to the fence. The coroner found he died of electrocution.
Thongdee pleaded guilty during police interrogation but denied any wrongdoing during the trials.
The court said the 220voltage electricity constituted an excessive measure for preventing stealing or robbery. According to the court, despite facing charges of growing kratom before, Thongdee had not ceased production of the illicit item.
However, the court took into account the fact Thongdee’s house was located in an isolated spot and many robberies had taken place in her neighbourhood.
