Cambodia's stock exchange begins trading

Phnom Penh - Listings began on Cambodia's new stock exchangeWednesday, with Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority shares gainingnearly 50 per cent in the first day of trading.

 

The state-run company's initial public offering came nine monthsafter the launch of Cambodia Securities Exchange, a joint venturebetween the government and the Korea Exchange.
 
Prime Minister Hun Sen rang a bell to open trading Wednesday anddeemed the listing an "historic event."   Dao Duy Anh, deputy chief executive officer for Cambodia-VietnamSecurities Plc, called the listing positive for investors and said itboded well for future trading.
 
"The world economy is going up and Cambodia now has a strongeconomy. A lot of investors want to buy and sell in Cambodia," hesaid.//DPA
