Myanmar court rules against Suu Kyi in legal battle with brother

Yangon - A Yangon court has awarded the estranged brother ofMyanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi half-ownership of the family home, where she spent 15 years under house arrest, her lawyer said Monday.

The lakeside property in Yangon has been the subject of a legal battle between Suu Kyi and her elder brother U Aung San Oo since 2000, when he sued for a share of the house that had been owned by their father, independence leader General Aung San.

Yangon's West District Court on Friday reversed an earlier court ruling and awarded him half-ownership of the home.

Suu Kyi's lawyer U Nyan Win said Monday that her client would appeal the ruling on the grounds that Aung San Oo is a US citizen and Myanmar law prohibits foreigners from owning land.

Her only living sibling has been living in the US since 1973.

"Myanmar's inheritance law cannot give or cannot allow foreigners to have unmovable goods: land, buildings. Now Aung San Suu Kyi's brother U Aung San Oo is a foreigner," a spokesman for her National League for Democracy said.//DPA
