Thiradet to remain a senator

Thiradet Meepian, who lost his position as Senate Speaker last week after a Criminal Court ruling, said yesterday he would retain his position as a senator.

The Criminal Court found Thiradet – a former ombudsman – guilty of malfeasance for issuing a regulation to give himself a pay increase. The ruling caused him to lose the Senate Speaker’s post.

Although there was a report that the new Senate Speaker should be an elected senator because both previous incumbents were elected, Thiradet said either selected or elected senators could be Senate president. “The most important thing for the top post is that he or she can do his or her duty neutrally.”
