Bangkok rushhour traffic slowing down

Average vehicle speeds in Bangkok decreased from 19 kilometres per hour last year to 18kph this year during morning rush hours and from 24kph to 23kph during evening rush hours, the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) reported Wednes

As a result of the slowdown, OTP director Chula Sukmanop said the agency would propose a model of different working hours for officers at the Commission for Management of Land Traffic’s meeting next week to alleviate traffic jams. The plan, which would involve asking private schools and companies to cooperate by changing their working hours (possibly by starting at 7.30am-8.30am or 8.30am-9.30am), could start as a pilot project in the Kiak Kai and Samsen areas, Chula said. The office would also discuss with police the possibility of moving Uturn points or bus stops on Paholyothin, Phetchaburi and Phetchakasem roads to reduce traffic jams, he added.
