Med students draw up code of conduct

For the first time, deans from 19 medical schools signing in to the Thailand Medical Expo will today recognise a code of conduct for Thai medical students.

Medical Council of Thailand president Dr Amnat Kusalanant said – as chairman of the event – the code of conduct had three main best practices.
First, students should adhere to the benefit of their fellow human beings, be moral and avoid any personal benefits that would ruin their reputations as medical students, their institutions and their medical ethics.
Second, their best practice towards patients – in which they respect patients’ rights and dignity and treat them properly as if they were their teachers.
Third, their best practice towards others – that they respect the dignity of their teachers, senior medical students, friends, junior medical students and personnel at every level.
The code of conduct was created by medical students from the 19 institutions as a guide for good practice by medical students. The code would help foster the students to become good doctors, Amnat said.
The expo is being held at Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre until tomorrow.
Awards will be presented to outstanding doctors today, including Khajornsak Silapaphochakul from Prince of Songkla University, Witthaya Chartbunchachai from Khon Kaen Hospital and Suphamit Chunsutthiwat from the Department of Disease Control.
Visitors to the event will be offered free health check-ups. Souvenirs will be given to event attendees aged over 90, whose longevity showed they had taken good care of their health.
Medical technologies are being showcased.
Advice on beauty surgery will be offered to interested visitors. There are also seminars and discussions on health, such as snoring as a sign of health threat, Thai plastic surgery and safe sex.
