House sets debate date; Senate wants extra day

Government whips have agreed to schedule a no-confidence debate on November 26-27, with voting on November 28, government whip chief Udomdet Rattanasatien said yesterday.

Meanwhile the Senate whip committee has rejected the government whips’ proposal to set November 28 as the date for the Senate to launch a general debate against the Yingluck Cabinet without voting.
Appointed Senator Kamnoon Sithisaman said the Senate whips disapproved of the date set by the government whips because the Senate’s debate would be conducted after the censure motion.
The Senate had earlier proposed two choices – November 16-17 and November 23-23 – for its general debate.
Appointed Senator Paiboon Nititawan said the November 28 session was not enough and the Senate’s general debate should be held on at least two days. He proposed the government extend the House session by one more day.
“The fact that the government set the Senate’s debate after the House’s censure debate reflects that it does not respect the Senate,” he said.
Kamnoon said although the PM had planned an overseas trip during the period, she could assign her deputies or relevant ministers to listen to suggestions and advice the Senators might offer.
Meanwhile, the prime minister will lead her new Cabinet members for a swearing-in ceremony before His Majesty the King at Siriraj Hospital starting at 5.30pm, according to Cabinet secretary-general Ampon Kitti-ampon.
