Results from some ABC research projects have already been used for finding solutions to problems faced by local communities. For example, a project to promote safe rice in Ubon Ratchathani using safe manufacturing methods is seeking support from government agencies, academics, and civil society to promote its production in the province.
The project was launched early last year in response to the high costs farmers incurred as a result of using chemical pesticides and fertilisers. Heavy reliance on chemicals is also damaging soil conditions and spreading plant disease, according to the research.
TRD deputy director Silaporn Buasai said her agency and the Ubon Ratchathani University had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on ABC research.
She was speaking during a recent seminar called “ABC Research Builds Knowledge and Creates New Opportunities”.
From 1997 to 2012, TRF funded 144 research projects in Ubon Ratchathani. These projects focus on a whole range of social, health and economic issues – ranging from education to database systems for community development.
“In addition to research, we have also provided management support,” said Silaporn.
