China stops uranium enrichment plan

Beijing (dpa) - A planned uranium enrichment facility in the southern Chinese city of Heshan has been canceled following protests by local residents, authorities said Saturday.

"The Heshan government respects the public's opinion and will not apply for approval for the project," said Mayor Wu Yuxiong.
Hundreds of people concerned about safety and environmental impacts from the nuclear fuel processing facility have been protesting since the project's announcement on July 4, the Xinhua news agency reported.
