Two soldiers injured in Narathiwat attack

Insurgents launched an attack on soldiers in Narathiwat's Joh I Rong subdistrict yesterday, detonating a bomb then engaging in a 15-minute firefight that left two soldiers with serious injuries.

The attack at 11.40am targeted three motorcycles of the six-man Santisuk 404 unit, which was transporting figs for teachers and students at Al-Islamiah School in Tambon Ma Reu Bo-ok.
Sergeant Siam Srima, 24, and Master Sergeant (First Class) Buala Srisompan, 53 were seriously injured as their vanguard motorbike was hit by the bomb.
Police at the scene later collected 50 spent bullets from M16 and AKA rifles.
Authorities suspect members of Ronda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK), an offshoot of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Pattani (BRN-C), carried out the attack.
Wanted men Masupian Mama and Mussuwan Jor-asae are being sought in connection with the attack.
Elsewhere yesterday, a roadside bomb detonated in Yala’s Bannang Sata district slightly injured volunteer paramilitary ranger Chaipol Meephaew, 31, as his team was on a teacher-protection foot patrol yesterday.
