Princess' foundation launches dictionaries

The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Foundation last week formally launched a series of Thai dictionaries covering about 300 stories published during the Sukhothai-Rattanakosin periods.

Khaisri Sri-arun, a member of the foundation, told a press conference on Friday at the Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre that the series comprised three sets.
The first set gives specific terms, including types of Thai literature, information about the authors, the periods and backgrounds when each story was composed, writing formats, synopses and the significance of the stories.
The second set presents information on the authors including their 203 names, biographies and written works. The third set explains the names of characters and places and miscellaneous names appearing in the stories.
Khaisri said 34 experts from academic institutions took nine years to complete the dictionaries after the Princess granted the foundation permission to run the Thai literature nomenclature project, which was initiated to celebrate her 50th birthday in 2005.
The dictionaries would be a good resource for people interested in studying Thai literature more deeply, she said.
The series are available at the branches of Chulalongkorn University Bookshop, Phufa, Saijaithai Foundation, Chitralada and Nanmeebooks. Call the foundation at 02-880-9212 for more information.
