Beloved great king remembered

Today, October 23, is a national holiday to honour and remember a beloved great king, King Rama V or King Chulalongkorn.

The day is called in Thai as "Wan Piyamaharaj Day". It is the memorial day of King Chulalongkorn, who initiated several major reforms in Thailand, for example in the areas of Thai educational system, military affairs and State Railway. Most of all, the king abolished slavery without leading to any bloodshed.
Government officials and Thais around the country remember the great king by paying homage to his statue or portrait in ceremonies held in all provinces.
The Nation joins the rest of Thais to remember our great king.
