Govt hands out shotguns to tambon leaders in deep South

The Provincial Administration Department (PAD) Thursday distributed six shotguns to tambon leaders in Narathiwat province as part of its plan to arm local leaders in the face of southern unrest.

PAD director-general Siripong Hantrakul led the gun distribution, which was organised during his trip to inspect the province’s Bacho district.
Siripong commended community and religious leaders for playing a vital role in bringing peace to the insurgency.
Bacho, once a critical spot plagued by violence, has been transformed from a red zone to yellow and green zones in 46 villages of six tambons, he said.
He pledged to earmark funds to buy additional guns for local leaders and defence volunteers.
