Russian boy in ferry accident dies

A Russian boy succumbed to his injuries from the much-publicised ferry accident off Chon Buri's Lan Island yesterday, raising the death toll to seven.

The ferry sunk on Sunday, throwing more than 200 passengers overboard and leaving six drowned. About 11 other victims sustained serious injuries.
As a result of the accident, 12-year-old Efimov Petr’s brain became swollen. He passed away at 10am yesterday.
He leaves behind his mother, Sosina Sarcylana, who is also receiving treatment at Samitivej Sriracha Hospital. The grieving mother lamented about the flawed safety and first aid, which she partly blamed for her son’s death.
“I am so saddened, I never imagined that I would lose my son,” she said.
Several senior officials visited Sarcylana yesterday.
Thanthip Milaksana, who heads Chon Buri’s tourism and sports office, said compensation for each death in the accident would be over Bt300,000.
“For each injured victim, the compensation will be around Bt200,000,” she said.
