Google and Microsoft to block child abuse images

London - Leading search engine operators Google and Microsoft on Monday announced that they are blocking more than 100,000 search terms linked to child abuse.

Instead the terms will result in warnings from Google and charities, Google chief executive Eric Schmidt wrote in an article for Britain's Daily Mail.
While the initial algorithms will apply to searches made in English, the changes will soon be rolled out in 158 languages, wrote Schmidt, "so the impact will be truly global." The measure comes in response to pressure from Prime Minister David Cameron, who this year urged internet companies to do more to get rid of online child pornography.
Monday's announcement represented "significant progress", Cameron told the Daily Mail.//DPA
