NJ magazine – part of Nation Multimedia Group – has been an integral player in the development of English-language standards among Thai students for almost two decades. With support from both the public and private sectors, the magazine has held its annual nationwide NJ Spelling Bee since 1998.
Combining both the latest technology and the more traditional face-to-face participation, the NJ Spelling Bee began the search for Thailand’s top speller with its online selection in July. Then it headed out on a roadshow of the North, Northeast, South and Central regions to find the top 50 regional representatives for the NJ Spelling Bee Grand Nation Final, which was held on Saturday at the Pope John XXIII Conference Centre at Assumption University’s Suvarnabhumi campus. The event was presided over by Reverend Bancha Saenghiran, rector magnificus of Assumption University, and Pana Janviroj, managing director of The Nation.
From over 4,000 entrants, down to 400 finalists, this year’s NJ Spelling Bee Champ of The Year is Sikarin Nipatthiranant, from class M6 at Bangkok Christian College. The clever winner was awarded a prestigious trophy sponsored by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as well as a once-in-a-lifetime, one-month English-language scholarship to attend Eltham College in Australia.
